Gmail has shipped a quiet revolution of features over five years. Most users have never enabled any of them. Below are the twelve worth the five-minute setup.

1. Keyboard shortcuts

Settings → See all settings → General → Keyboard shortcuts ON. Now C composes, R replies, J/K moves through emails, E archives. Half the speed boost of being a Gmail power user comes from this.

2. Schedule send

Click the small arrow next to "Send." Schedule for tomorrow morning, weekend, or any specific time. Useful for replying to work emails outside hours without setting expectations.

3. Undo send window

Settings → General → Undo Send → 30 seconds. The default 5 seconds is too short. Now you get 30 seconds to recall any email after pressing Send.

4. Templates (canned responses)

Settings → Advanced → Templates ON. Now save any draft as a reusable template. Useful for: introductions, "thanks for applying" responses, FAQ replies.

5. Filters that auto-archive

Search anything → click the search dropdown → "Create filter." Set "Skip the inbox (Archive it)" plus a label. Newsletters and notifications never bother you again, but they're findable when needed.

6. Multiple inboxes

Settings → Inbox → Multiple inboxes. Split your inbox into sections — Starred, Sent-to-me, Newsletters. Massively reduces context-switching.

7. Confidential mode

For sending sensitive info, click the lock icon in compose. The email expires after your chosen time and forwarding is disabled. Not perfect security, but better than plain.

8. Snooze

Click the clock icon to snooze an email until tomorrow / next week. Removes it from the inbox and brings it back when relevant.

9. Search operators

from:boss@, has:attachment, older_than:1y size:5m — Gmail's search is shockingly powerful. Worth memorizing five operators.

10. Mute

For email threads you no longer want to follow — More menu → Mute. New replies go straight to archive but remain findable.

11. Aliases via the plus sign

Sign up for newsletters as yourname+newsletter@gmail.com. The emails still arrive in your inbox, but you can filter or block by alias if it gets sold.

12. Offline mode

Settings → Offline → Enable. Gmail works without internet, syncs when reconnected. Useful on flights or weak connections.
